Unbinding the Gospel is perhaps the most revolutionary book written for mainline Protestant churches. The author and project leader, Mary Grace Reese, conducted a Lilly-endowed research project on the state of evangelism in protestant denominations. Throughout the four-year study, Reese conducted over 1,000 interviews with church leaders, pastors and lay leaders in multiple denominations, church sizes and age across the country. The results are truly eye opening.
Reese found that the only thing that truly separates members and churches that do evangelism well, versus those that do not, is a living and active relationship with Jesus Christ and a deep love for their church. That's it.
Reese concludes that if one's faith is not overflowing in their life, he or she may not have much to share. You can't give what you don't have.
Though the book begins with a discussion of faith sharing, it ultimately challenges the church to focus not on designing a better coffee hour or sprucing up the garden but on its spiritual development.
