If you are interested in learning more about the process leading to ordination as a Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church USA, we suggest you log on to the following website:

pcusa.org/prep4min

This site contains information about possible vocations, how the process works, what resources may be available, the forms that will need to be filled out at various steps along the way and much more.

In addition to the requirements established by the national church, Albany Presbytery has set the following additional steps that must be completed:

1. A background check, both financial and criminal.

2. Completion of a certified program in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at a hospital or similar location. Locally, this is available at Albany Medical Center. Other programs may be available close to chosen seminaries.

  3. Completion of Career Assessment (CA), a battery of tests intended to measure suitability for the vocation of ministry and identify possible areas where growth is required.

Ideally, one will enter the Inquiry phase of the process in the year before seminary studies are started. This will provide an opportunity for discussion and guidance with the Committee in seminary selection, finances, home church support and so on.
