We are pleased to introduce Commissioned Ruling Elder (CRE) Michael Barron, who is serving at First United Presbyterian Church of Salem. Take a few moments to learn more about his background, his journey to ministry, and what he looks forward to as he and the congregation seek God’s vision for the church’s future.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I was born in Cornwall, NY – just outside of Newburgh. From what I’ve been told, we moved a lot. My father was in radio sales so moving sometimes happened. We finally settled in Hudson Falls where I was baptized at the Presbyterian Church. I have been a part of that congregation ever since.
Graduated from Hudson Falls High School where I was a part of the music department through choir, band, and theater. I also played sports. Went on to SUNY Potsdam and the Crane School of Music School and I, as well as some overly competitive performance major students, did not continue together. Who would have thought about mental health issues in the late 80s.
I then did various jobs, including joining my father in radio where I was the overnight talent for about three years. It was there I first met my now wife of 32 years, Jane. We have two children; both grown.
I moved to social services from radio. I began in Washington County and assisted people with various assistance from cash to then called food stamps (now SNAP), medical, and heating assistance.
I went to work in 2006 at my current employer SUNY Research Foundation – University of Buffalo with the Learning, Engagement, and Development Services (LEADS). Huge title to basically say I train Social Services throughout New York State.
I am now, as of September 2026, two years in remission for cancer. I know many in Albany Presbytery and beyond prayed for me during the time when we were misdiagnosed to finding a path.
Will you share a little about your hobbies with us?
I loved playing golf and bowling. Since my health changes, they are not things I can participate in currently. So, walking is now the big hobby I have. I do get out and enjoy the Adirondacks when I am able. We also try to get down to the Myrtle Beach area as often as we can.
How did you decide to go into ministry as a CRE?
It was while at Washington County that I started hearing God more as I helped fulfill the needs of people who needed the helping hands up. During this time, I wanted to ignore that call from God. Had too much to do, but naturally – God is persistent and typically gets what God wants in the end. It wasn’t until about 2011 that I spoke with Norma Brown who led the group when I started. I completed my coursework through Dubuque Theological Seminary.
What are you most looking forward to in your ministry as CRE at First United Presbyterian Church of Salem?
This is of course my second run in Salem. I always believe God has a reason for everything. My first run focused on healing. They had lost their beloved pastor and this split some people when the pastor left. We went through healing from that loss and growth and recovery began.
This time we will be looking at “what does God wants us to do?” As with many small rural churches, an aging congregation, a building that has items needed for repair, and the downtrodden of funds we start our walk to see and listen for God’s plan for First United in Salem.
